Essential Standards
Parish Episcopal School’s popular music ensemble, Essential Standards was founded in 2017 with the mission to amplify student participation in music ensembles, and it has become a key piece in the artistic life of the school. ES meets before school every morning and satisfies arts credit requirements just as school-day courses do. Honoring student voice and choice, music selected for study and performance in ES is driven by the members and reflects their interest in the classics and current musical trends. A major piece in ES’s structure is that members are encouraged to play multiple instruments and to sing as well.
With the continued growth of Parish's music program, Essential Standards now provides high-school students with the opportunity to express themselves outside of typical choral and instrumental norms. Recently, ES was invited to participate in APME LIVE events at the Association for Popular Music Education's 2022 conference in Detroit and 2023 conference in New Orleans.
