Sketched by Parish Student, Natalie Pham.
Steve received degrees in music education with an emphasis in vocal music and conducting from the University of Louisville (B.M.E., M.M.E.) and Ball State University (D.A. in Music). He has been active in music education for 43 years, as a teacher, researcher, and conductor, and has served as clinician and conductor for regional choirs in Minnesota and Missouri. Assignments at Parish Episcopal School include teaching AP music theory, class guitar, class piano, vocal technique and performance, music technology, and leading the ESSENTIAL STANDARDS popular music ensemble which he founded. Steve also provides music for both Parish's upper and lower school chapel programs.
Before coming to Parish, Steve was Associate Professor of Music at Southeast Missouri State University (2000–2012) where at various times he acted as Director of Choral Activities and Music Education Coordinator. In 2008, Steve served as arranger and accompanist for the Mid-America Suzuki Strings tour of Japan and Singapore; and in 2003, Steve was music director and conductor for the Southeast Missouri Music Academy’s production of the Benjamin Britten opera, Noye’s Fludde. Over 150 children and adults from the Cape Girardeau area were involved in the production. The Academy reprised Noye’s Fludde in 2004 and toured the opera to Minneapolis with astounding success. Noye’s Fludde was produced again in May 2011 to introduce a new generation of children to opera. Other operas Steve conducted at Southeast were Copland’s The Tender Land and Mozart’s Così fan tutte.
Steve's other teaching positions included serving as Bemidji (MN) State University's Music Education Specialist (1996–2000) and as Louisville (KY) Collegiate School's music teacher (1980–1996) where his children’s choirs performed with the Louisville Ballet, the Louisville Orchestra, and the Kentucky Opera. He also has been actively involved in Suzuki summer music institutes in both Bemidji and Louisville as conductor, arranger, and choral clinician.
In addition to his teaching duties and related activities, Steve has served as choirmaster at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, New Albany, Indiana and Christ Episcopal Church, Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
